It all began when I was 10 years old back in 1979 when I discovered the “Famous Monsters of Filmland” magazine... |
In 1979, a 10-year-old boy in suburban Winnipeg discovered Famous “Monsters of Filmland” magazine and became obsessed with all the ghouls and creatures within its pages.
A “Monster Kid” was born!
Soon this “horrormaniac” was on a quest to acquire a Horror Make-up Kit from a novelty shop so he could win a Halloween costume contest that would help him win the affections of a girl at school.

Horrormania ’79 is a bi-monthly published Young Adult book series for adults chronicling a ten-year-old Canadian boy’s coming-of-age story of how he became a horrormaniac and his adventures that ensued throughout the year 1979.
Adapted from the full length novel of the same name, these individual chapter books are retro-styled with a Schoolastic Book Services vibe and are illustrated with neat-o artwork from Emily Baxter.
Horrormania ‘79 will appeal to anyone with an affinity for pop culture, old school Halloween and those with a yen for a nostalgic look back to a time where Disco, roller skating, Star Wars, KISS and vampire movies ruled the cultural landscape! |
Book One: Total Eclipse of Horror, takes place on the day of the total eclipse of the sun back in February 1979. Kevin hires the toughest kid in the fifth grade, Douggie, to beat up Mike Felch, the school bully, after Felch embarrasses Kevin in front of his crush, Lori Stewart, during morning recess at school.
|
In Book Two: Horror of Nosferatu, it’s Kevin’s 10th birthday party and he’s very excited about it. He and his brother have turned their basement into a haunted house to play in and then the plan is to go and see Jaws 2 at the movie theatre.
But things take a turn for the worse when the party is crashed by “Grumpy” Grampa and the school bully, Mike Felch.
However, things take a worser turn later that night when Kevin gets a grand idea to scare his older sister with his new Nosferatu mask, but all does not go according to plan and the prank ends up taking a horrific turn!
